Every Tuesday, Ranger Elizabeth Walden captures weekly harvest and garden activities in the Roosevelt Home vegetable garden to post on Facebook.
In early August, she shared the NPS Garden team and volunteers harvesting over 30 varieties of vegetables and herbs:
Tender red and green jeweled Lettuces ‘Adriana’, ‘Cherokee,’ and ‘Muir’ filled several crates along with an abundance of tomatoes, which have ripened early this year. Grapes ‘Somerset Seedless’ were beginning to ripen at the rear of the garden next to clusters of Grapes ‘Concord’ hanging green and growing large.
The harvest filled 16 yellow home garden crates, all of which were delivered to Dutchess Outreach in the city of Poughkeepsie. Some of the produce is distributed through the Food Pantry, and some is used by the chefs at the Lunch Box to prepare delicious and nutritious meals.
