The National Park Service in Hyde Park is excited to welcome Christopher Pray to our leadership team.
Christopher joined the parks in April 2024, following Dave Hayes’ retirement in October, 2023. He comes to the NPS after a 25-year career as a civilian Natural Resources specialist working for the US Army Garrison West Point, our neighbor on the Hudson. Christopher is a native of the Hudson Valley, growing up in New Windsor until moving to Schoharie County where he attended SUNY Cobleskill for a degree in Fish and Wildlife Management. Upon taking a summer seasonal position after college at West Point, the temporary job turned into a career, ultimately leading to a position as the Natural Resources Manager for the installation. His responsibilities at West Point included threatened and endangered species management, a large hunting and fishing program, pest management, forestry and wildfire management, natural resources regulation and permitting, and NEPA compliance.
In his own words, Christopher reflects: “I am so excited to be with the Park Service here at Roosevelt/Vanderbilt NHS, with this change in scenery and mission. From a natural resources perspective, it is fascinating to see the differences between my old installation and the park. The differences in management history, geology and geography from one site to the next shows a unique ecology and new opportunities to observe and learn. From a mission perspective I feel so fortunate to be part of a team devoted to education, preservation, and recreation. What a wonder that these places are here for all of us to experience – Springwood with its history and the imprint of one our greatest leaders; Eleanor’s Home with its simplicity and humanity; and the great, gilded majesty of the Vanderbilt Mansion overstuffed with art and priceless objects – all connected by woods, and gardens, and fields. It’s a great opportunity.”
Christopher hit the ground running and has remarkable insight into a variety of resource management issues at the parks. We look forward to sharing his knowledge and program activities with our partners and community groups.
