2026 marks a milestone for the FDR Hyde Park Foundation: the tenth anniversary of re-establishment of the Roosevelt vegetable garden.
Ten years ago, a dedicated group of NPS staff, volunteers, historians, and community members came together to restore this historic green space, honoring Franklin D. Roosevelt’s legacy of sustainability and stewardship. Our vision was to reconnect visitors with the agricultural roots of Hyde Park, where the Roosevelts grew their own produce.
Over the past decade, the garden has flourished, yielding not just vegetables, but educational opportunities and community engagement. School groups, local residents, and tourists alike have enjoyed hands-on workshops and seasonal harvests, learning about heirloom varieties and the importance of sustainable gardening practices. The garden stands today as a living tribute to FDR’s commitment to self-reliance and environmental consciousness.
Dutchess Outreach
This year we also celebrate our 10 year partnership with Dutchess Outreach. The produce grown by staff and volunteers at the Home of FDR vegetable garden and donated by the FDR Hyde Park Foundation (who also played a vital role in the Garden’s initial restoration) has been a consistent contribution to Dutchess Outreach’s many avenues of food distribution. We are proud to be a part of their mission to provide access to healthy food for everyone.
As we celebrate this ten-year milestone, we invite everyone to reflect on the garden’s impact. Through our dedicated volunteer team and partnership with Dutchess Outreach, the community has come together to provide equal access to fresh, locally grown produce.
The Roosevelt’s vegetable garden reminds us that the values of the past can thrive in the present. Here’s to another decade of growth, learning, and honoring the Roosevelt tradition!
